The Dodge Charger came about in the 60s when automobile manufacturers were exploring new ideas in the personal luxury and specialty car segments.
Chrysler didn’t waste any time at all being one of the first to enter the specialty car market with their dodge division.
The cars fit between the “pony car” Ford Mustang, and the “personal luxury” Ford Thunderbird. Chrysler intended to use the B-body for a sporty and fastback look.
In retaliation to the Ford Mustang and Plymouth Barracuda, the Fastback Charger was introduced mid-season of 1966.
In 1970 the Dodge Charger was the last of the second generation to be released. Slightly modified to the previous model with new electric headlight doors replacing the old vacuum style.
The tail lights were similar to the previous years model however the 300 and R/T models came with a new more attractive tail light panel.
The front of the car featured a chrome wraparound bumper and grille that was no longer divided in the middle.
It wasn’t just the exterior that had a slight facelift, but the interior also included a few changes to the high-back bucket seats, door panels also revised and the ignition was moved from the dash to the steering column.
With a bit of research we found the Dodge Charger that featured in the Fast and the Furious, was actually a 1969 model which was actually made to look like a 1970 model for the film.
The car was build for drags and it did a 1/4 mile in 9 seconds flat. Well that was pretty impressive. Its got a 900hp Supercharged Chrysler engine.
