In February this year (2016) a 1957 Ferrari 335 S Spider driven by the Great British motor racers of the 50s, was sold for over $41 million AUD at auction.
The lucky buyer of the Ferrari 335 S Spider went to the hands of a private French collector who has been collection for more than 40 years.
As you would imagine, this collectable would have had the buyer feverish with excitement at the Retromobile Classic Car Show – where the auction took place.
Previous to this record was the 1953 Mercedes-Benz W196 racer driven by Juan Manuel Fangio, sold for over $28 million.
Over the years based on the average cars sold, Ferraris have proven to be the world’s most valuable cars sold at auctions.
The 335 S held not only a beautiful look, but also its prestige for having a monumental history.
First driven by British racer, Peter Collins and his French partner Maurice Trintignant in the 1957 Sebring 12 hours.
Then again by Wolfgang von Trips in the Mille Miglia in May, where it placed second in the race.
The 335 S is an incredible rare legendary car with amazing provenance and racing history.
Over the last 40 years the car had been a part of a private collection, when the opportunity arose to auction the car for sale, this was one a serious collector would be crazy to miss.
Purely a racing car, it has sentiment for being one that never got crushed during a race that makes it all the more amazing it survived.
